SMP

SMP stands for System Modification Program.  This product was designed by IBM to manage and maintain the MVS operating system.  IBM uses SMP to install fixes and upgrades to the MVS operating system and program products.  Other vendors use SMP to install their products and maintenance.  Lastly, installation system programmers use SMP to install operating system modifications, users exits, and any other programs that interface with the MVS operating system or products that are under SMP control.

Introduction

The key to SMP lies in it key functions.  These key functions are:

bulletProvide a standard process for controlling the operating system and program product libraries
bulletMaintain system integrity by providing a standard method for installing changes that has checks for dependencies, version control, and detailed verification.
bulletA reporting facility to allow the system programmer to verify the status of the products under SMP control

All modifications to the software under SMP control need to be made via SMP.  If you don’t do this, SMP will not reflect the current state of the software products.

When you first start with SMP it can be overwhelming.  Yes, it is much easier to make direct changes to the software products but you need to resist this and create the JOB to install the change via SMP.  In the long run you will be surprised how easy it gets and how stable the system becomes after using only SMP.
